POLICOSANOL

Natural Cure to

High Cholesterol

Policosanols are natural extracts that reduce blood cholesterol levels and thereby decrease risk of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). Policosanol has no side effects but acts with the same efficacy as drugs. Policosanol intake has substantial benefits for patients with high cholesterol content and for diabetics.

EFFECTS OF POLICOSANOL SUPPLEMENTATION ON HEALTH

CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH
Hypercholestrolemia (High blood cholesterol).

Angina (Chest pain due to an inadequate supply of oxygen to the heart muscle).
Normalizes cholesterol levels (increases HDL and decreases LDL) without side effects. Its efficacy and safety have been proven in numerous clinical trials.

At a daily dosage of 20 mg, LDL levels drop by 25-30% during the first 8-12 weeks of therapy. HDL levels increased by 15-25% after 8 weeks. (Clinical pharmacology and significance of a new lipid lowering agent - Gouni - Berthold I, Berthold HK. Medical Policlinic, University of Bonn, Bonn, Germany).

Reduces proliferation of cells in arteries and allows blood to pass through without resistance.
Inhibits formation of clots. Policosanol and aspirin work better together.
Benefits post menopausal women who have increased cholesterol levels.

Study on 224 women, on an 18 week course showed reduction of 17% in total cholesterol, 25% reduction in LDL and 29% increase in HDL. (Int J Clin Pharmacol Res 2001: 21 (1); 31-41)

Benefits elderly people: Effective, safe and well tolerated by patients over 60 years of age.
Benefits patients with Type II Hypercholesterolemia and disturbances of hepatic function: Reduced total cholesterol by 13.6%, reduced LDL by 25.5% and increased HDL by 11.5%.
Benefits patients with Nephrotic syndrome: Reduces total cholesterol, LDL and increases HDL without affecting renal function.
Benefits healthy people: Results indicated that greater amount of LDL is oxidized without policosanol and at a faster rate.

Healthy volunteers responded to policosanol intake of 10 mg/day and showed a 20.2% reduction in LDL levels and 15.2 % increase in HDL levels (British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology).

Benefits patients with angina: Improves clinical evolution and ECG testing responses of CHD patients with myocardial ischemia.
Diabetes (a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar levels, which result from defects in insulin secretion, or action, or both).
Patients with Type II or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) may have elevated cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. Policosanol showed positive results with type II diabetic patients, with no elevation in blood sugar. (Int J Clin Pharmacol Res 1999; 19 (4): 117-27).
53 diabetics with high cholesterol, 12 week study showed 14% reduction in total cholesterol, 20% reduction in LDL and 7.5% increase in HDL.

SOURCE:
Policosanols are a mixture of fatty alcohols obtained from sugar cane, bee wax or rice wax.

THE MECHANISM
Policosanols block cholesterol formation in the liver. It lowers cholesterol and LDL-C by (a) Inhibiting cholesterol synthesis (b) by exerting no direct inhibition on HMG-Co A reductase and (c) by increasing LDL receptor dependent processing.

OTC NATURAL THEREPEUTICS FROM THE HOUSE OF NOVO:

Novo's Super Critical Fluid Extraction (SCFE) process, extracts Policosanol at its highest level of concentration and purity. NovoPure Policosanol is available in the form of powder -and in most cases blended with other ingredients. Novo has filed a patent (pending) for this process.

RECOMMENDED DOSAGE:
A dosage of 10-20 mg of Policosanol is recommended.

POLICOSANOL AND STATINS - A COMPARISON
In a recent study published in the journal, Clinical Drug Investigations, comparing policosanol and other highly effective pharmaceutical compounds called statins, it was found that policosanol treatment is superior to treatment with the prescription drug Fluvastatin. Besides policosanol was found to be better tolerated and provided superior protection against LDL oxidation (which promotes formation of atherosclerotic plaque) compared with Fluvastatin. In another study an interesting benefit was found - that Policosanol might also improve one's ability to react to visual stimulus.(Fontani G, Maffei D, Lodi L. Policosanol, reaction time and event related potentials. Neuropychobiology 2000; 41: 158-65)
Other comparative studies indicate that 10 mg of policosanol is equivalent in efficacy to 20 mg of Lovastatin, 10 mg Pravastatin, 10 mg Simvastatin. While these drugs have known side effects, policosanol is completely safe and can be used by diabetics, elderly subjects and patients with impaired liver damage.
